Altar Builders in the Bible
The men who built altars were constructed as places of worship and reverence for God. They provided a designated space to offer sacrifices, prayers, and praise to God.
Noah: Built the first altar after leaving the ark, Noah built an altar to the Lord and offered burnt offerings on it (Genesis 8:20)
Abraham: Abraham built multiple altars throughout his journey as he sought to worship and seek God’s guidance. Some of the altars he built include:
Altar at Shechem: Abraham built an altar at Shechem after God appeared to him and promised to give the land to his descendants (Genesis 12:7)
Altar between Bethel and Ai (Genesis 12:8)
Altar at Hebron: When Abraham moved his tent to Hebron (Genesis 13:18)
Altar on Mount Moriah: Abraham was going to offer his son Isaac (Genesis 22:9)
Isaac: Altar at Beersheba when he receives a promise from God (Genesis 26:25)
Jacob: Altar at Bethel after his dream (Genesis 28:20-22)
Altar at Galeed with Laban (Genesis 31:45-47)
Altar at Shechem (Genesis 33:20)
Altar at Bethel and renamed it El Bethel after a vision of angels (Genesis 35:7)
Moses: Moses built an altar after a victory over the Amalekites (Exodus 17:15-16)
Altar at Mount Sinai after receiving the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:24-26)
Altar at the foot of Mount Sinai after the Israelites received the Ten Commandments and made a covenant with God (Exodus 24:4)
Balaam: the prophet, built seven altars and offered sacrifices on them at the request of King Balak (Numbers 23:1–2).
Joshua: built an alter on Mount Ebal after crossing the Jordan River (Joshua 8:30)
Gideon: built an alter in the town of Ophrah (Judges 6:24)
Elijah: rebuilt a broken altar on Mount Carmel before calling fire down from heaven (1 Kings 18:31-32)
